Students accessing the Food and Cookery programmes here at The Aspire Academy will work towards one of the following courses depending on the timing of their referral and their level of ability:

NCFE CACHE L2 Certificate in Understanding Nutrition & Health, 601/3389/2

Edexcel BTEC L2 Award in Home Cooking Skills, 500/8020/9

What does the NCFE Level 2 Award in Nutrition & Health qualification cover?

This qualification is designed for students with an interest in food and cookery. It will give them a basic understanding of the skills required for a career in food and is intended for students who are interested in improving their understanding of nutrition and dietary choices, and their role in improving and maintaining health and wellbeing.

How many credits are required to complete it?

This qualification consists of 3 mandatory units…

  • Explore Principles of Healthy Eating
  • Consider Nutritional Needs of a Variety of Individuals
  • Use Food and Nutrition Information to Plan a Healthy Diet

What related qualifications can you progress to?

Students who achieve this qualification could progress to:

  • L2 Diploma in Health & Social Care
  • L2 qualifications in Hospitality and Catering

What does the NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Nutrition & Health qualification cover?

This qualification is designed for students with an interest in food and cookery and is designed for a wide range of learners with some existing knowledge of this area who are interested in improving their understanding of nutrition and healthy eating. These may be learners who wish to access this training with a view to progress to further qualifications or employment within Sport and Recreation, Exercise and Fitness, Hospitality and Catering or Healthcare.

How many credits are required to complete it?

To be awarded the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Nutrition and Health, learners are required to successfully complete 6 mandatory units:

  • Unit 01 Explore principles of healthy eating
  • Unit 02 Consider nutritional needs of a variety of individuals
  • Unit 03 Use food and nutrition information to plan a healthy diet
  • Unit 04 The principles of weight management
  • Unit 05 Understanding eating disorders
  • Unit 06 Principles of food safety for the home environment

What does the BTEC Level 2 Award in Home Cooking Skills qualification cover?

Cooking is an essential life skill, empowering us to make changes that benefit our health and wellbeing. The Home Cooking Skills course aims to give every young person the basic skills and knowledge to be able to cook for themselves in a healthy, cost-effective way, as well as gain the confidence to share these skills with friends and family.

What will you learn?

You will learn essential knowledge and skills such as:

  • kitchen basics: what equipment you need and the best way to stock your store cupboard, fridge and freezer
  • food safety and hygiene: knife safety, fridge management and rotation
  • how to shop cleverly: shopping lists, seasonal food and planning ahead
  • preparing ingredients and understanding confusing food labels.

How are Home Cooking Skills qualifications structured?

The Level 2 Award is 6x credits and develops the student’s ability to plan and prepare a series of nutritious home-cooked meals for breakfast, snacks, lunch and dinner, and helps them understand how to cook economically.
