Yesterday, our Aspire Academy football team delivered a spirited and determined performance at a football tournament held in memory of Finley Dawson, whose tragic passing brought teams together in both competition and remembrance.
Team Aspire approached the tournament with professionalism, beginning the day with a structured warm-up phase led by the team captain, setting the tone for a focused and disciplined performance.
Team Aspire made an excellent start to the tournament with a 3–1 victory over St Clare’s School. After a competitive opening, Aspire showed their attacking quality and composure to take control of the game and secure a deserved win.
Their second fixture came against Esteem North Academy, resulting in a 3–0 defeat. Aspire were 1–0 down for much of the game and created several clear chances, even striking the post, but were unable to find the finishing touch. As they pushed forward in search of an equaliser, they were caught on the counter-attack late on, with the score line ultimately not fully reflecting the competitiveness of the match.
In the third match, with a place in the final at stake, Aspire faced Derby Pride Academy. In a closely contested encounter, Aspire battled hard and were level at 1–1 heading into the closing stages. Pushing forward in search of a winner, they were cruelly caught out by the final kick of the game, conceding late to suffer a narrow 2–1 defeat and miss out on a place in the final.
Refusing to let disappointment define their day, Aspire responded superbly in the Third Place Play-off, once again facing St Clare’s School. Demonstrating resilience and professionalism, they secured a convincing 3–0 victory to seal third place and finish the tournament on a high.
Beyond the results, the occasion served as a powerful reminder of football’s ability to unite communities. Team Aspire represented themselves with pride, respect, and sportsmanship throughout, honouring Finley Dawson’s memory in the best possible way. All participating schools within our beloved Trust should be proud.
