It was a gloomy damp day at The Black Country Living Museum but that didn’t dampen the spirits of The Beyond Aspire pupils!

They explored a mine, seeing what it was like working at the coal face from the age of 8 enduring 12 hour shifts, rode a double decker bus complete with a conductor giving out tickets, ate chips cooked in beef dripping and walked through the boatyard where The Peaky Blinders had once tread.

Beyond Aspire: Christmas Party

Beyond Aspire: May Half Term 2021 – Isle of Wight Residential

Day 3:

Our last full day – a day of beaches.

Our first activity after breakfast was to get back down to Bembridge beach for some exploration! It wasn’t long before we had found some crabs and fish. Our plan was to stay on the beach all morning but this was interrupted by some good old fashion British rain. A quick rethink and we found ourselves in Shanklin where some braved the sea whilst others enjoyed the arcades and outside rides.

The weather started to improve a bit so instead of jumping on the minibus we opted to make the two mile walk back on foot to Sandown. As we got closer the sun decided to come back out so we treated ourselves to another dip in the sea. Tired legs led to a lovely hour on the beach just chatting and talking about what we’d all enjoyed over the last few days.

A trip like this really allows our pupils to open up and it’s great to see a group of 10, who hardly knew each other a few days ago, becoming a real team. As we start to pack our bags for the journey home the question is already being asked “if we can come back”. Hopefully it won’t be that long!

The staff team would like to thank to all those that have joined for being so well behaved and importantly, entertaining.

Day 2:

Tired faces this morning as we headed to breakfast but after a ‘Full English’ the group were ready for their first activity – THE GIANT SWING which is always a favourite. The screams as the chord is released could be heard all around camp.

Next down to Archery with the green team taking a narrow victory over the blues.

Then it was time to leave camp to head out to explore the Island starting at the ex Royal residence Osborne House. Built between 1845 and 1851 it was once the palatial holiday home of Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert. Only the ground floor was open but to make up for this there was an array of Victorian activities including a show from a fire breather. The beach at Osborne is a long walk but well worth it especially with the weather being so beautiful.

To finish off the day we headed to the seaside town of Sandown with its pier, arcades and fish & chips on the beach. As the sun began to set students were still loving swimming in the sea.

Day 1:

On Monday, 10 pupils and 5 members of staff set off to Bembridge, on the Isle of Wight, for a 3x night residential trip as part of our ‘Aspire Plus’ programme.

The biggest news from day one is that for the first time we were ready and on the road a whole half an hour ahead of schedule with all pupils arriving early – it was great to see the excitement on their faces. For all but one of them this was their first time. The first half of the journey was fantastic but we fell victim to the curse of bank holiday traffic!

Eventually we arrived at the ferry, cue the usual well worn joke of “has everyone got their passport?” leading to panic on faces.

Upon arriving in the island we stopped to take in the views from the Downs then on to our accommodation. Our first activity was due to be problem solving but after a day on the minibus we opted for an afternoon on the beach. It was lovely to see our guys enjoying themselves in the sea a much needed moment of stillness after what’s been a challenging year for many.

We finished the evening with a campfire which provided a chance for a little bit of reflection on the day. Early nights for some whilst others opted to still be awake into the early hours leading to some tired faces.
